Our History

County offices and districts across the state have been, and continue to, respond to the challenges of increasing success for African American students. Believing that we should learn from one another, the Merced County Office of Education facilitated a pre-conference session at the 2019 California Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) Annual Conference to provide an opportunity for collaboration and shared learning.

Representatives from the Merced County Office of Education, Merced Area CAASS, Riverside County Office of Education and Madera Unified School District shared about their journey and learnings during the pre-conference session. Dr. Rose Owens-West from WestEd served as the moderator for the session. The session was designed in a roundtable format of sharing and audience discussion around key drivers focused on improving outcomes for African American and Black students.

Despite setbacks from the COVID pandemic, CaNAASS has forged ahead with a growing membership from across the state providing a common ground to identify barriers and share promising practices. An outcome of the collective efforts from CaNAASS is this website which serves as a resource for all who are joining the mission to focus on successful futures for African American students.
